Volkswagen – “Sign then Drive”
Volkswagen has started up their yearly Sign then Drive event again and it’s fair to say that this may be one of their better campaigns for this particular event. It seems that every month there is a new event for at least one particular type of vehicle, but only a few that seem worth the price tag. Then again, the key word is seems, you can never really quite trust a car dealer.
Let’s pretend we can trust Volkswagen (or not) and just enjoy their commercials. Apparently, this Sign then Drive event is just so good, you’ll forget you’re test driving their cars. This concept isn’t particularly funny or that original, but Volkswagen has put a nice twist on it. The first “let’s go to vegas” spot was funny enough, but the particular ad we’re discussing in this post, is just a tad bit better. Yes, the idea of taking your local car dealer to vegas is amusing, but accidentally locking him in your garage is that much better.
Hopefully they will put out a few more this season but you never know with those crazy Germans. As long as they don’t become super predictable, we’ll be all about them. So far, so good, though.
Nando’s – “Last Dictator Standing”
This commercial was released recently by the South African fast food company, then promptly pulled after receiving threats from a group standing behind the Zimbabwe President, Robert Mugabe who the commercial depicts as the “last Dictator.”
Nando’s has become known for it’s rather racy advertisements, but when it came to mocking their President, apparently they went too far. The commercial itself is quite funny while also being quite offensive…if you’re offended by making fun of dictators (both dead and alive), that is.
Though the company pulled the commercial, it seems that may have done more good than bad, as it gave the ‘banned’ commercial a lot of buzz around the net. It’s a hard world now, to try and rid a piece of released media from the long fingers of the interweb. Once it’s out there, it’s out there and when it gets ‘banned’, everyone want’s to see it, and they probably will.
